At just 19 years old, Catie Norwood is full of life, energy, and excitement for the future. A determined young woman with an intellectual disability (IDD), she loves riding horses, creating arts and crafts, listening to music, and dancing. Whether she’s swimming in the ocean, shopping, or traveling, Catie embraces every experience with enthusiasm. At home, she shares her joy with her two beloved dogs, Gidget and Betty. But beyond her hobbies, Catie has a big dream—one that many young adults share: to live independently.

The Path to Independence

Like many individuals working toward independent living, Catie and her family focus on small, daily steps to build the skills she’ll need. She’s already mastered keeping a schedule, doing laundry, and keeping her room tidy. But some tasks, like preparing meals and styling her hair, still require a little assistance.

Her journey is one of growth, learning, and confidence-building, with her parents supporting her every step of the way. “I’m excited!” Catie says about the prospect of living on her own—though she admits with a smile, “Mom is nervous!”

Finding Community at Osprey Village

For Catie, the most exciting part about living independently is being part of a community. She can’t wait to call Osprey Village home, surrounded by friends and a vibrant community. She’s eager to join activities, build connections, and hopes to find a job she loves.

Osprey Village represents more than just a place to live; it’s a safe, nurturing environment where she can thrive. The friendships, social opportunities, and support system available will allow her to create a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Moments of Confidence

While building independence is a journey, there have been moments when Catie has truly felt, “I can do this.” Competing in horse shows is one of those moments. As she gets closer to managing them all on her own, she beams with pride every time she earns a ribbon.

Another moment of self-discovery came when she went ice skating for the first time. “I did great!" Ms. Garza, her teacher, even had to tell her to slow down. A huge inspiration, Ms. Garza has always encouraged her to take on new challenges and believe in herself.

Looking Forward

When asked what she’s most excited about in her future home, Catie has a surprising answer: “Laundry!” While many might see laundry as a chore, for her, it symbolizes independence and the ability to take care of herself.

Living on her own will be a major milestone, and she knows it will bring her a sense of pride and accomplishment. Catie shares that successfully achieving independence will make her "feel proud."

Inspiring Others with Intellectual Disabilities

Catie's family hopes her story will encourage others to pursue their own dreams of independence. For her and her family, Osprey Village is more than just a residence—it’s a place where she can live safely, make lasting friendships, and enjoy the activities she loves. It’s a place where she can be herself, supported by a community that believes in her potential.

As Catie continues her journey, her excitement and determination serve as an inspiration to others. Her story is a testament to the power of dreams, perseverance, and the incredible opportunities that Osprey Village will provide for individuals seeking a life of independence, belonging, and joy.
