Susan Doubles

BOARD MEMBER

“Life is about Loving, Learning and Caring”

Mrs. Doubles has been involved in Osprey Village since its inception in 2008. Susan, mother of a then 38-year-old developmentally disabled daughter, realized the desperate need for Residential Housing for Developmentally Disabled Adults in southern Beaufort County.

As a founder and active board member, Susan aspires to bring Osprey Village “Full Circle” from a paper format to “Brick & Mortar” housing in the Hilton Head/Bluffton community and surrounding area.

Prior to raising a family of 5 children, Susan taught Elementary Education in the first IPI (Individualized Prescription Instruction) School in the Pittsburgh area in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh (1963 – 1965).

In 1988, Susan resumed teaching in Fairfax County, Virginia. She taught for the next 8 years, receiving “The Teacher of the Year Award” in her Community School, mentored student teachers from George Mason University, traveled with a team demonstrating “Problem Solving thru Design Technology,” presented at numerous educational conferences/workshops, and served on a planning committee/panel in New York City to discuss “Best Practices” in elementary education throughout the United States.

In 1996, Susan began a career in teaching Pre-School at the First Presbyterian Day School of HHI. She traveled to Italy to study the Reggio Emilia approach. This approach propelled her to a higher level as a teacher. She applied this approach for the next 12 years in her classroom.

Susan believes that being an advocate for a population that cannot “Speak for Themselves” allows her to travel the “Closing Circle of her Life’ with great commitment & contentment.

“Alone we can do so little, Together we can do so much” – Helen Keller
